Linking: The Most Important Ingredient For SEO
In 2007 it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that linking is what ultimately helps a site grow in popularity, unless you're new to the internet. It's what the net thrives on and it's also what search engines use to determine a site's worth. Every link that comes into your site can have a dramatic impact on how your site ranks on the search engines. Just a few good ones can easily boost your site above many others and it shouldn't be ignored.
If you have to do linking, always use normal HTML for a link and nothing fancy. JavaScript links for example might be a problem for some of the search engines. Although there's talk about them being able to read JavaScript, you don't want to risk your efforts in a wasted campaign. Another type of link you want to avoid are those with really long strings at the end. These are usually session links and obviously the engines aren't really even going to turn their head.
When it comes to links make sure that you get the ones that have the same theme as your own. Theme relevancy tests showed that theme relevancy works wonderfully well and will continue to be focused on. This doesn't mean that if somebody offers you a link from an unrelated site that you should ignore them. A link's always good, but you do want one within your theme most.
Another area you might want to concentrate on is on the actual internal links themselves. Since engines are going to be crawling on your site to index them, you'll want the links on your site to be easy to find. Also making sure that the words that you're using to linking on your own site matches what it is linking to. Many people make the mistake of calling their homepage, home. For optimization purposes use something more descriptive and relevant to your overall site.
Your goal should be to have as many sites linking to you as possible that are of good quality. So don't slack on this part and make sure you do good in this area because it's the most important ranking factor for your site. After that, you'll probably need to have a good linking scheme within your own site where everything is going smoothly.
