Search engine optimisation is a very important aspect for new and established websites. This article discusses the most important aspects of building link exchanges between your website and related websites in order to improve your website's search engine ranking positions (SERPs) within the big three - Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Five methods for link exchanging are as follows: Link baiting, Reciprocal link exchange networks, Article copywriting, Link exchange mailing, and Directory submission.

Link Baiting

Link baiting is a process of building software or scripts in which other webmasters can place on their website in exchange for a link. Websites which provide free website statistics for instance, usually include a link in the HTML code they provide to link back to their website. The anchor text of this link will usually contain keywords relating to their website. These types of websites seem to improve their search engine ranking positions within the big three through doing very little work and these one way links are seen as more important to the search engines.

Reciprocal Link Exchange Networks

There are many established reciprocal link exchange networks on the Internet today. These website networks allow you to exchange website links between your website and related websites. You can normally define your own anchor text to place in the link for webmasters to place on their website, rather than placing the name of your website. Some networks which provide this facility are LinkMetro, Link2Me and LinkMarket. Other link exchange networks include Top Link Partners - A one way text link exchange network, and Free Relevant Links. These one way link exchange networks allow you to signup to a round-robin system, in which you place HTML code on your website containing approximately four links, and in return you will receive a new incoming one way text link to your website periodically. One way text links are much more preferred than reciprocal links, and provide much more value on your ranking within the big three.

Article Copywriting

Look for articles related to your website, and simply rewrite the article content. This is a method undertaken by most webmasters to get valuable one way links from article directories. Although it would be nice to see fresh article content on the Internet - try coming up with some fresh ideas for your article. To begin writing articles pick out 5 important points about the article and simply expand each point with 3-5 sentences, similar to this article. You'll need to include an introduction and conclusion in your article for it to provide a valid and worthy point.

Link Exchange Mailing

Find websites which are related to yours and simply ask for a link exchange. You'll be able to find good link partners by searching your keyword on the big three. Try to make your email directed to the recipient as much as possible, make sure you refer to their website in the email. You should also avoid advertising your website within the email as some webmasters may flag this as SPAM. For webmasters to be motivated to link to your website offer them a link page with at least some Google page rank. Many webmasters may ignore your email if you do not provide them with a decent reciprocal link page.

Directory Submission

Submit your website to directories! Alot of website directories provide one way links to your website without anything in return. Just try typing in "business directory" or "webmaster directory" in one of the big three, this will bring up lots of search engine directories for you to submit your website to. There are thousands of directories out there, some you have to pay for e.g. Yahoo and some you have to wait along time to be listed e.g. Dmoz. All in all it is very much worth getting listed on Dmoz as many websites copy the Dmoz directory, this would therefore give you one way links to your website. Yahoo also increases the positions of websites within their search result pages if the website exists within the directory, although you do have to pay $299 to get listed!

As you can see there are many methods available for you to optimise your website within the search engine ranking pages using link exchanges. The most effective ones in my opinion are article submission, as these are one way links to your website, and link baiting, although this method can be more difficult to optimise for. Any of these five methods will help with your link building and search engine optimisation so keep up the hard work!
