Google and the need for diversification

Webmasters all over the world often completely depend on Google when it comes to traffic from search engines. If you are running an online business to make a living traffic and visitors on your website are crucial to your success. Losing traffic from a search engine results in immediate loss of income in most cases. Many webmasters do not realize the problems that can arise from a change in search algorithm of a search engine until it happens and their website suddenly drops out of the top search results for many important keywords.

Trying to fix the sudden loss in traffic is often difficult. It can happen fast that traffic on your website slows down to a crawl, but it can take months to recover from this loss in traffic. If a major search engine like Google.com changes the way that it values keywords, back links and creates a new mix for its search algorithm, the consequences can be felt all over the Internet. Long established websites suddenly drop down to the bottom of the search results they were top in before.

How can webmasters prepare for an event like this? Depending on a search engine alone to deliver visitors and traffic to a website is a dangerous game. If that source of traffic goes down the impact is way too dramatic and significant. Webmasters should build up several ways of how to drive traffic to their website. Ranking high in search engine results is important, but the need to diversify is always present. Building a brand should be the ultimate goal so that people do think of the business right away when it comes to certain things. Those visitors would come to the website by just typing in the domain name and not by going through a search engine first. Running recurring advertising campaigns on different platforms is another great way of creating an independent stream of traffic to a website and makes them less dependent from search engine traffic.

Webmasters should also consider building more than one source of income. Meaning - having more than one website that creates income. The additional website or business should be in a different industry or at least serve a different niche market for diversification. If one market gets hit by depression or other problems the other side of the business might be needed to be able to make months end and to keep the business alive. Some webmasters on the Internet have optimized this concept and are running a whole network of related and unrelated websites to create several streams of income. If one website gets penalized by search engines the other ones will still be able to soften the loss of income from the one site. Smart webmasters diversify and are prepared for Day "X".
