Cut Throat Internet Business
Just smurfing around the old interweb and checking me hotmail account I notice Microsoft is trying to push itself onto us even more on the Net. Now before you switch off thinking this is another tirade about how MS wants to rule the whole world...hang on.
The internet is a bloody competitive place. Microsoft has the lion's share of the operating system market, the chances are very strong that you are reading this on a computer running some kind of Windows. On the internet they are a big player but they are up against Google, Yahoo and a few slightly smaller players. Google is still considered the most popular search engine and to succeed on the internet you need to succeed with Google.
Microsoft is fighting the lucrative search engine war but as yet they are still loosing. So now they are trying to sneak in through the back door, your operating system. They already redirect misspelled internet addresses to their MSN search, they have plans to offer search right from the desktop, bypassing any browser based searches like Google. Of course Google want none of this so they are developing programs to install that work in a similar way. Google has the biggest share of internet advertising with Google AdSense, to which I already subscribe. Now Yahoo is trying to take their slice by creating their own version. I'm sure Microsoft will have some kind of cunning and devious plan to do the same.
But what about me? What about the home based Joe Schmuck with a crappy cable connection and a few websites? What chance have I in getting my own share of the internet folk out there?
This AM I was watching the news. Here in the UK Tesco are the leading supermarket chain and as such they are coming in for some serious criticism. People hate success and like to tear apart anyone who is successful. Tesco are to UK supermarkets what Microsoft are to IT. Any town where a big new Tesco is opened will have an empty and desolate high street. Small traders cannot compete.
The story continued with several interviews of disgruntled shopkeepers complaining they cannot match the purchasing power and influence of Tesco. But what struck me was the customers in the street were happy, and one butcher who's business was brutally slashed said "This is the best thing that has happened for my business". WHAT? Well he had diversified, he started and thrived in catering both indoor and outdoor. Insted of sitting there moaning about the great "them and us" he'd put his brain into gear and found a solution. Tesco are simply supplying the things people want, that is why they are successful. Microsoft, Google and Yahoo are doing exactly the same. They all come in for harsh criticism, but they are the ones making the money.
So I know I cannot compete against the big players. So what can I do? I need to find my niche. I do not know what that is yet. I have not found the "Great Solution". But if I never look, then I never will.
